AI Backyard Design
Upload a photo of your backyard and see it redesigned in 15+ styles. Your house, fence, and trees stay; everything else gets designed. Free to try.

The backyard is the hardest space to redesign in your head. It is big, it has fixed structures you can't move, and every decision (patio here or there, lawn or gravel, hedge or fence) costs real money to get wrong. AI backyard design shortcuts the imagination problem: you upload one photo of your actual yard, pick a style or describe what you want, and get back a photorealistic version of that same yard, redesigned. The examples on this page are all real backyards processed this way, several of them the same yard restyled repeatedly from a single photo.
What you can change in a backyard redesign
Lawn
the single biggest visual and maintenance decision in most yards: shrink it, re-edge it, or replace it with gravel or ground cover.
Hardscape
a paver patio, flagstone path, deck, or fire pit area, added or restyled and integrated with your existing levels.
Planting
beds, borders, hedges, trees, and pots in the style you choose, from cottage abundance to desert minimalism.
Privacy
hedges, screens, pergolas, and trees placed where your fence line actually is.
Structures
pergolas, outdoor kitchens, seating areas, water features, and lighting, rendered onto your real footprint.

Design my backyard: how the workflow goes
Take one photo from where you usually see the yard, the back door or the kitchen window, in daylight. Upload it, pick a style (or type what you want in plain words: more privacy, less lawn, a fire pit corner), and generate. The first result teaches you what you actually want; the third or fourth is usually the keeper. Because iterations are effectively unlimited, the right way to use it is to be greedy: try modern, then cottage, then japanese on the same photo, and compare what each does with your problem spots.
Six starting directions that work on most backyards
Less lawn
more living, shrink the grass to a defined shape and give the reclaimed space to a patio and deep planting. The most-requested direction we see.
The evening yard
string lights, a fire pit corner and warm path lighting. Cheap to build and transforms how often the yard gets used.
Privacy first
layered hedges and a pergola to close off neighbors before any styling. Fixes the reason many yards go unused.
The family layout
tough lawn kept for play, planting pushed to the edges, one shaded adult corner that survives the trampoline years.
The entertainer
dining zone off the kitchen door, lounge zone deeper in, and lighting that makes both work after dark.
The low-maintenance conversion
gravel ground plane, massed grasses and drip irrigation. For people who want the view without the weekends.

What it will not do
An AI redesign is a design decision tool, not a construction document. You will not get measurements, grading, drainage, or a plant schedule with quantities, and plants are chosen for the look, not validated against your USDA zone. What it replaces is the expensive first phase of design: figuring out the direction. Lock the look here, then hand the render to a landscaper or designer to engineer, and you skip the paid revision rounds where most design budgets die.

Frequently asked questions
Is the AI garden design tool actually free?
Genuinely free to start: every free account gets 5 photorealistic preview designs (watermarked, preview resolution), no credit card, and the design advice tool needs no signup at all. Paid plans, from $19/month (yearly) for 250 designs/month, remove the watermark and the cap.
How does it work?
Upload a photo of your outdoor space, pick a style (Modern, Japanese, Mediterranean, etc.) or describe one in words, and choose any additions you want (pool, firepit, pergola, lighting). The AI returns a photorealistic redesign in 1-2 minutes. You can iterate as many times as you want.
Can AI design my backyard from a photo of its current state, even if it's a mess?
Yes. Dead lawn, bare dirt, clutter, half-finished projects, the AI reads the space and structures, not the mess. For completely empty or under-construction yards, use the dedicated Empty Backyard tool in the Create menu, which fills a bare space with a complete design instead of enhancing what's there.
How is this different from backyard design software?
Traditional design software (2D planners, 3D modelers) makes you rebuild your yard as a model before you can design anything, which takes hours and looks like a video game. Photo-based AI skips the modeling: your photo is the model, and results are photorealistic because they are built from the photo itself.
How realistic are the AI designs?
Photorealistic. The AI preserves your space's structure (house, fence, hardscape, existing trees) and intelligently swaps in new landscaping, materials, furniture, and features in the chosen style. Most users can't tell our renders from real photos at first glance.
What kind of photo should I upload?
A daytime photo of your outdoor space taken from a comfortable standing height usually works best. The AI handles tricky angles, partial views, and even messy or empty spaces, but a clean, well-lit photo gives the best result. JPEG or PNG up to 12 MB.
Does the AI know what grows in my climate zone?
The AI generates plausible, beautiful designs but doesn't validate plants against your specific USDA hardiness zone or climate. Always cross-reference suggested plants against your local conditions before buying. For zone-specific plant guides, see our plants section.
Can I download the design?
Yes, every design is downloadable as a full-resolution JPG (1024×1024). You can save it to your phone, share it on social media, send it to a contractor, or print it for reference when you're at the garden center.
Is my photo private?
Your uploads are private to your account. We don't sell your photos, don't use them for marketing, and don't show them to other users. You can delete any design from your account at any time. We retain photos only to power your design history.
