Most patio design tools are drag-and-drop planners: you place furniture icons on a grid and squint at the result, trying to imagine it as your actual patio. This one works from a photo. Upload your patio as it is today, bare concrete, cracked pavers, or a decent patio that just feels unfinished, and the AI redesigns it in place: new surface, furniture that fits the actual dimensions, a pergola if the space carries it, planting at the edges, lighting for the evening. Photorealistic, on your real patio, in about a minute.

What the tool designs

The surface

pavers, flagstone, brick, stamped concrete, or gravel, replacing whatever is there now.

Furniture

dining sets, loungers, sectionals, and fire tables scaled to the space in the photo.

Overhead

pergolas, shade sails, string lights, and umbrellas where the proportions support them.

Edges

planters, borders, hedges, and pots that connect the patio to the rest of the yard.

Mood

daytime entertaining, cozy evening with warm lighting, or minimalist and low-maintenance.

Bare concrete to finished patio

The most common starting photo we see is a plain concrete slab: builder-grade, structurally fine, visually dead. It's also the highest-leverage redesign, because the slab usually stays. A resurface or overlay, furniture, a pergola, and edge planting transform it for a fraction of a full rebuild, and the render shows exactly which of those moves does the work. Generate a few directions on your slab photo and you'll know whether you need a new surface or just better furniture and lighting.

How to use it, in three steps

Photograph the patio

or the spot where one should go, from the door you would step out of. Daylight, phone camera, the mess can stay.

Pick a direction

a style plus anything specific: cover it with a pergola, replace the slab with pavers, make it work at night. Generate; the design lands in about a minute.

Compare versions side by side

the pergola version against the umbrella version, pavers against gravel. Download the winner and use it as the shopping list.

Patio design software vs a photo tool

Dedicated patio design software (2D planners, CAD-style tools) earns its keep when you need construction drawings: exact paver counts, cut lines, base depths. But most homeowners are not there yet, they are deciding what the patio should look like. For that phase, modeling your yard in software is hours of setup to answer a question a photo answers in a minute. Use the photo tool to settle the design, then let your installer produce the technical layout from it.

Frequently asked questions

Is the AI garden design tool actually free?

Genuinely free to start: every free account gets 5 photorealistic preview designs (watermarked, preview resolution), no credit card, and the design advice tool needs no signup at all. Paid plans, from $19/month (yearly) for 250 designs/month, remove the watermark and the cap.

How does it work?

Upload a photo of your outdoor space, pick a style (Modern, Japanese, Mediterranean, etc.) or describe one in words, and choose any additions you want (pool, firepit, pergola, lighting). The AI returns a photorealistic redesign in 1-2 minutes. You can iterate as many times as you want.

Does it work on a patio that doesn't exist yet?

Yes. Photograph the spot where the patio should go, lawn, dirt, or gravel, and describe what you want. The AI designs the patio into the space. For fully empty yards, the Empty Backyard tool in the Create menu is built for exactly this.

Can it design around a patio's fixed features?

Yes. The AI preserves structural elements it detects in the photo, house walls, steps, level changes, established trees, and designs around them rather than deleting them. That's what keeps the result buildable rather than fantasy.

How realistic are the AI designs?

Photorealistic. The AI preserves your space's structure (house, fence, hardscape, existing trees) and intelligently swaps in new landscaping, materials, furniture, and features in the chosen style. Most users can't tell our renders from real photos at first glance.

What kind of photo should I upload?

A daytime photo of your outdoor space taken from a comfortable standing height usually works best. The AI handles tricky angles, partial views, and even messy or empty spaces, but a clean, well-lit photo gives the best result. JPEG or PNG up to 12 MB.

Can I download the design?

Yes, every design is downloadable as a full-resolution JPG (1024×1024). You can save it to your phone, share it on social media, send it to a contractor, or print it for reference when you're at the garden center.

Can I use the designs commercially?

The Pro plan ($69/mo yearly, $99/mo monthly) includes a full commercial license, landscape designers, real estate agents, and contractors use it to show clients renders before they commit. The Personal plan is for individual non-commercial use.
